Huffing and Puffing I Cycled All The Way

Something I always told myself that one day will happen. And sticking to my word on a bright Sunday morning when the city was its quietest I hauled myself out of bed, got ready and headed to Cubbon park.

Jumping on a bike and riding into the roads of Bangalore, I asked myself with a thumping heart can I really do this? What if I fall off, or worse some crackpot driver crashes into me? Once I started pedaling, leaving the starting point behind my fears started leaving as well and I had this whole group around so you tend to feel more secure you know ;

As I got the curious expressions of guys and gals behind their wheels, I got this feeling of yipee and awesomeness coming over (Such a feel coming over meeeee!) Someone rode along and explained the various gears. Despite all my rambling questions on what, where, how, who between joy and a state of hypertension I started figuring out it out slowly. For Uphill you need to decrease the gear numver so its easier to pull, downhill - duh ) Someone else readjusted the bike seat for me. I always say this Bangaloreans = awesome people.

Passing old airport road, I told myself If I can come till here then I can cycle to work everyday think of the monies saved on gas! This is on the cards and wishful thinking at that moment.

Now came the hard part, with getting barely any exercise (except for gardening on weekends) I could literally hear my muscles protesting. Definitely could not feel the bums or thighs. Red faced and sweaty I kept on pedaling with the group huffing and puffing of course.

So it took me 1 hours 30 minutes to reach the end, out of breath, exhausted, legs feeling like jelly, dreaming of a big plate of biryani and bed I reached my destination and my goal. And now I did feel the bums and thighs. So totally worth it.

Hoping to get inspired with this. Who knows now, a new found hobby just mayybe ?

Proof of the pudding is in the taste

Veggie Delight at Lal Bagh and More in the City

Lal Bagh in Bangalore came alive with an array of colours, flowers, shops and home-grown veggies in the annual Horticultural show from August 7th-15th. The Garden CityFarmers and Organic Terrace Gardeners had their very own stall displaying vegetables and fruits of top urban farmers in the city. There were huge brinjals ripening to gorgeous yellow, sweet chillies making your mouth water (making you imagine hot bhajjis’s), beautiful looking squash, strawberries, Israeli oranges, onions, beetroots, and different tomato species. Fresh herbs like oregano, mint and lemongrass and healthy greens of lettuce and bhindi could be seen.

This is the first time GCF has participated in the annual horticulture show in Bangalore and they wish to reach out to Bangloreans showing them that they grow their kitchen vegetables at home in an organic manner. Tiny labels were seen on all the veggies and fruit plants identifying each one and OTGians were found chatting about organic food and helping the public out with questions.  GCF also encourage people to join them on their facebook group start their own gardens through inspiring work and enjoy the soul-satisfying and healthy experience of growing vegetables and greens at home

Bangalore is seeing a whole environmental oriented lot who encourage and educate people about the benefits of fresh veggies, hold workshops and help beginners starting out on their green patch. GCF is an NGO which educates people about kitchen gardening and urges urban folk to grow organic gardens in their home spaces which are chemically-free and also reduce the food miles of what they eat.

Their upcoming event ‘Oota from your Thota’ (food from your garden) is going to be held on the 25th of August where most of the city's farmers and veggie lovers are going to be along with loads of stalls selling produce, gardening equipment, compost and encouraging people to somewhere. “We hope that people see that growing is an easy and an engaging hobby and resources are ready if they wish to start” said Laxminarayan a top terrace gardener from GCF.

Quick lessons on growing –
You can use any container that has 6-8 inches of depth for common veggies
like beans, beets, lettuce, tomato, onion, chillies. Herbs will do best in window
boxes or plant them in between your veggies!
For the soil – An equal mix of vermicompost, compost, red soil and sand is ideal
Water your plants everyday and spend time checking them, they will return back the time and effort in the form of delicious produce!
Plant your seeds in ample sunlight – Make sure your veggies get at least 8 hours daily
Most used veggies in the city – Chillies, tomatoes, brinjals, spinach and all kinds of sopu (greens)

Veggies that tastes delicious in food:
Drumsticks in sambhar
All sopu (greens) go well in dals
Tomatoes are best in chutneys
Mint and lemongrass can be added to tea

For those who wish to start off you can visit The Nurserymen Cooperative Society, Lalbagh, KH Road Telephone (+91 80 26576733) and get started on your garden and join the OTG group on facebook

Pushing carbon emissions bAcKwArDs and celebrating Earth Day

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22, a day where we remind ourselves that we have precious resources to protect; the ground, sky, water and everything above, between and below are reasons why we have been able to come so far in such a short period. This is a day where we remember what we are standing on - The Earth.

Earth Day was celebrated in Bangalore on April 21 2012 with much pomp, song and believe it or not pushing two-wheelers backwards by 200 college students from B.N.M Institute of Technology on a hot Saturday afternoon. Centre for Social Markets and BNM decided that its high time the present gen is reminded about issues of carbon belching, fuel drinking, noisy two-wheelers or just about anything that comes with an engine and how sustainable transport can replace the motor world.
So why two-wheelers? And why pushed backwards which takes a lot of effort? So Bangalore stands no. 1 (and not proudly) of holding the most number of two-wheelers in Bangalore - 26 lakhs. This pretty much outstrips all the rest (stats here) accounting for the increase in carbon emissions, pollution rise and high temperatures which the city has been witnessed in the last few years. Also Bangalore stands no. 3 (very proud here) of holding a young population who rather opt for bikes and scooty peps than cycles. With the number of two-wheelers + 20 somethings in the city this campaign was perfect to encourage our 'push backwards for an earth cause' campaign.

Pushing backwards was an effort to create an awareness of emissions levels caused by two-wheelers ridden by youngsters. We were telling the public become sustainable in your transport pick a cycle, walk or use public transportation, learn to curb those emissions. Learn to protect your environment for your own sake.

We pushed for 2 kilometers in Banashakari area from the college to the main road, passed the post office, reached the BDA Complex and back to the college. Going downhill at one point threatened all the bikes plummeting into one another, but with 5 people to one engine the students controlled the entire operation beautifully. With the drum beating to various tunes, some youngsters started dancing tapori style - almost like a festival procession. And it was! A festival celebrating the earth, celebrating our home, the air, water and ground which we depend upon.

An operation which involved top environmental organisations - Sanctuary Asia, Earth Day Network and Greenpeace who were our supporters and stood like pillars throughout the rally. Our media partner Namma Bengaluru Foundation gave us the media action in Bangalore.

The day ended with Greenpeace creating a human chain of a bicycle and a pledge taken by the 200 students promising to save 100,000 km of carbon emissions till the next Earth Day April 22, 2012.

What a perfect Earth Day celebration in Bangalore, and a milestone for me as an enthusiastic person wishing to make a difference. I will be doing much more.
